What is it like studying a Masters in Medical Anthropology and Mental Health?

Students on SOAS’ Medical Anthropology and Mental Health MA reflect on their experiences of the course, and of being part of the CAMHRA community.

Students on SOAS, University of London’s MA Medical Anthropology and Mental Health reflect on how the course has shaped their understanding of mental health, distress and lived experience. In this video, they share what drew them to the programme and how anthropology has challenged them to see both themselves and the world in new ways.

Alongside the academic learning, students speak about the importance of community, conversation and connection. They reflect on the diverse perspectives brought by fellow students and staff, and on the lasting relationships formed through being part of CAMHRA and the wider SOAS community.

Master’s Level

Courses of study connected to CAMHRA are available through two master’s programmes.

MA in Medical Anthropology and Mental Health

This course incorporates perspectives from social, cultural, medical, and psychological anthropology. The MA is designed to help medical and mental health practitioners, service users, activists, policymakers, and others to develop anthropological skills in understanding mental distress and designing care solutions. Students are supervised in the conduct of their own original research, which might inform practice-based careers and/or doctoral research.

MRes Social Anthropology

This course is for postgraduates wishing to conduct a research project on the anthropology of mental health. This more research-intensive programme is for those who already hold a bachelor’s and/or master’s degree in social/cultural anthropology.

 

The MRes is often undertaken in preparation for PhD research.
